FAQ

Can I watch a class without joining?

We encourage you to come by and watch or try a class for free to make sure what we teach is in line with your goals and learning style. Just drop by and introduce yourself during any class. We will be happy to talk with you and answer any of your questions. You can even speak with the other students, new and old, to discuss their experiences.

What should I wear?

Track-pants, sneakers, and a T-Shirt will do great. If you’ve decided that Wing Chun is for you, you will get a free training T-shirt with your membership, and may purchase the optional uniform kung-fu pants.

Do I get graded?

The Wing Chun Academy offers a grading system as an option. Grading certificates are available for those who wish to be graded. There is no formal testing, when you are ready for the next level, it will be awarded to you. We feel that our hands-on approach to teaching will allow the instructor to know when you’re ready for the next level.

I’m not in shape, can I still join?

The academy’s teaching methods are tailored to suit each student individually. Regardless of your size, shape, or current physical status, you will be able to learn Wing Chun to your desired level. Classes start with a 30 minute instructor led warm-up which can be taken at your own pace.

How old do I have to be to join?

The academy has students as young as 12 and as old as 60 years who have enjoyed attending our classes. Wing Chun focuses on precision, and precision takes patience. We recommend you’re at least 12 years old before joining, although exceptions are made on a case by case basis.

Can I start any-time?

Yes, classes run daily, so just come on by during a class. You can also call or email the academy if you have any questions. The first lesson is free so you can start trying it out any time.

Will I be taught by Sifu Allan Graham personally?

Yes, Sifu Allan Graham is almost always on the training floor to personally teach, demonstrate, and answer questions at the Phillip Branch.

Will I learn self defence? Is it hard to learn?

Wing Chun is all about practical self defense. The drills and training methods are simple to learn and easy to practice. Even advanced techniques are taught using simple drills that can be practiced any time.

Is Wing Chun a good martial art for women to study?

Absolutely. In fact, Wing Chun was designed by a woman. It does not rely on strength as it’s success is attributed to the way it uses scientific principles and logic to defeat strength.

Will I get punched, bruised, or thrown to the ground?

No, injuries of any sort are not tolerated. We focus on training the skills you require to defend yourself. To do this does not necessarily mean you need to be attacked, hit, or thrown to the ground. We focus on creating an enjoyable learning atmosphere – not a fight club.  Eventually as you improve you may want to test your skills and may include contact at your comfort level.

I’ve taken another martial art. Can I still do Wing Chun?

Of course! As a matter of fact, Sifu Allan Graham has taught many black belts from other martial arts who are looking to learn a different skill set. Many students of other martial arts appreciate the methods and logic of Wing Chun, and wish to learn them in greater detail.
